Beautiful watercolor painting of a striking black and orange Painted Lady butterfly with a purple autumn crocus. Don't they make a wonderful pair?
My painting models were are the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay in early October. I was inspired by the perfect color combination. I decided not to fill in the background and let the butterfly and crocus stand on their own.
Also known as "Autumn Blooming Crocus," Colchicums are actually members of the lily family. Who knew? (Martha Stewart in her blog)
This colorful little painting would make a wonderful gift for someone who loves butterflies.
