This painting was inspired by a boat ride on the Acadian Nature Cruise with my dad narrating. He's a naturalist, and I remember taking the reference photo wrapped in a blanket because it was so windy. No seals on the rocks that day, but they were in the water.
The crisp red and white lighthouse against the golden rocks and churning surf is such a striking combination. Egg Rock is totally unique among Maine lighthouses. It looks like home to me.
If you've been out on a whale watch or nature cruise from Bar Harbor, you've gone right past it. You can also spot it from many places along the Park Loop Road or from the mountain trails in Acadia.
