Monhegan sits about ten miles out to sea and the whole island covers just one square mile. You can take a day trip from Boothbay, New Harbor, or Port Clyde. Plan to explore a few trails, including the Whitehead trail out from the lighthouse, have an excellent chicken salad sandwich and ice cream, and make it back to the mainland before dark. It's a wonderful boat ride on a warm summer day.
