Why You'll Love It
Watercolor print of Thuya Garden captures the beloved perennial garden in Northeast Harbor, Maine, on a quiet summer day, with colorful blooms lining the paths and the peaceful, sheltered feeling of a garden that rewards every visit.
Thuya Garden is a charming oasis nestled in the woods overlooking Northeast Harbor, Maine. Asticou Terraces walk provides excellent views of both as you wind up the 200 steps along the cliff to reach the garden.
My inspiration for this painting was showing the length of the main garden allee to include the fabulous red roofed shelters and ancient apple tree. I love how you can feel the warmth of the summer day as you scan the lovely flowers.
Many of the plants came from Beatrix Farrand's summer cottage at Reef Point in Bar Harbor. The wonderful library and museum in Thuya Lodge details the history of the garden and other landscapes around Mount Desert Island. I've also painted Thuya's sister garden, Asticou Azalea Garden, many times. Lily Pond, Japanese Lantern, and Spring's Promise are available as prints.
