Original watercolor painting of a Blue Jay captures a curious visitor to my parents' crabapple tree in Ellsworth, in vibrant, realistic detail.
Look at how perfectly his feet grip the branch, and that expression! You almost get the sense he could fly right off the page. The brilliant blue really sings in watercolor, and as with nearly all my paintings, the white you see is pure paper, not paint. It's a fun challenge to stick with transparent watercolor and let the paper do the work.
He reminds me of Squeaker, a baby Blue Jay I rescued as a little girl. I'm pretty sure it's not the same one.
