About Beth

Hello! I’m Beth Whitney, a local artist with a passion for bringing Maine’s beautiful outdoor spaces to life in my watercolor paintings.

About Beth

Hello! I’m a full-time artist living and painting in Southern Maine. I’m best known for my realistic, light-filled watercolor landscape paintings.

Artist Statement

My purpose in painting is to celebrate Maine’s natural beauty and inspire a deep appreciation for God’s beautiful creation. My hope is that people will be refreshed by my art and feel like they are actually there, enjoying the fresh air and wonderful landscapes. I’m honored to paint and share these special places with you.

Art Inspired by Nature

I’m a full-time watercolor artist specializing in coastal Maine landscapes. I grew up in Ellsworth and have been painting professionally for more than 24 years. Inspiration comes from my love of nature, especially exploring Maine’s many beautiful lighthouses, scenic byways, and coastal trails. There are countless land trusts, preserves, and parks just waiting to be painted! You might even recognize Camden Harbor from Mt. Megunticook in the photo above.

I love how watercolor’s transparent qualities produce incredibly vivid, highly detailed, and subtle tonal changes. Maine has a very particular quality of light, a freshness in its pristine landscape. Watercolor is the perfect medium to translate this to paper. It’s about timing, patience, and enjoying the unexpected. Add a few drops of water, a little salt, tip your board, and everything changes! It’s so dynamic – just like nature.

Art Makes Life Beautiful

It’s wonderful how art speaks to each person a little differently.  Beautiful art adds color and sunshine to your world. It transforms an okay space into a welcoming sanctuary that makes you happy. Art evokes the nostalgia of a special person or place, reviving long-forgotten memories and feelings. It celebrates milestones and important life events like engagements, weddings, and the birth of a child. These are all real examples of stories people have shared with me. I’m honored to know my art has helped bring people joy and added beauty to their daily lives.

Painting Process & Style

I’m an avid photographer and paint primarily from my own reference photos. This lets me compose my paintings on location, so it’s just a matter of actually drawing and painting the scene back in my studio. The photo is a guide so that I get all of the elements in the right place (rock, tree, island). Then I paint what I actually see in the scene – the life and heart of that day, what I experienced when I was there. My photos are notes that help fill in the details.

Online Studio / Gallery

My original watercolors and giclee prints are available through my online studio/gallery. The website is easily accessible for everyone to enjoy and purchase regardless of where they live. I really enjoy engaging with collectors personally, learning about why they chose a particular painting, and any history they have with the featured location.

I’m also very pleased to be represented by Small Wonder Gallery in Camden, Maine. Heidi really loves art and also provides expert framing services. She has both originals and giclee prints on display in her gallery.

Exhibitions
